How I Use Affirmations
Here are five tips I use daily when I write affirmations:
First, I try to be super upbeat when doing affirmations.
Sometimes over the top. Even if I'm not really feeling it.
Being over the top about it can create that energy in me so that maybe I do get excited about something I might be dreading.
(Hint: making spreadsheets.)
Here are a couple of examples:
- I am ecstatic to start the day today.
- I am so excited to work on this project.
Another way I come up with affirmations is by reversing a negative thought.
Those negative thinking patterns sneak up on all of us. For me, they crop up pretty often. #justsayin
Maybe I'm thinking "of course I failed because I always fail." So I'll counter it with an affirmation like "I am always a success."
I am often using affirmations to reverse those negative thoughts.
Write your affirmations down.
I write my affirmations down on the computer. (It doesn't have to be in a fancy journal with a fountain pen and highlighters.)
That way I can type it in the morning and add however many I want throughout the day.
I try to write at least ten every day, but some days I do 20 or 30 if I'm having a particularly bad day. #srslytho
Another tip: focus on the affirmations that you need for that day.
Look ahead and see what's going on, what might be a weak spot, and do affirmations around preventing that before it even starts.
So, if I have a meeting call with my team and I want to present a really solid leader, I'll do affirmations around leadership.
Perhaps I'll write:
- My team looks to me for guidance.
- I am powerful.
- People look to me as a leader.
Last, I always put a positive slant on things.
Here are some of my favorite affirmations:
- I am safe
- I am worthy
- I am capable
- I am a woman of grace and beauty
- I change the world with my stories
- I don't control the way things happen around me and I was never meant to
I probably say that last one to myself at least 20 times a day. It brings me a lot of comfort. Honestly, when I repeat it, I can feel it changing my levels of anxiety.
Here are some of the affirmations I like for parenting:
- I am a present mother.
- I am prepared to emotionally support my family today.
- I am excited to be present.
- It's okay for my son to feel angry, I don't have to be angry, too. (THis one is all about allowing other people their emotions. It doesn't have to effect me, too.)
Here are some of my favorite affirmations for success:
- My success is inevitable.
- Success flows to me.
- I am a success.
- My endeavors are always successful.
